History about the oils.

For centuries, people have used plants and their oils successfully.

These abundant oils are not only fragrant, but life and wellness enhancing.
The use of the oils has been proven in many circumstances, both personally and scientifically.

What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated, complex and powerful plant extracts. These subtle, aromatic and volatile liquids are extracted, through distillation, from the flowers, seeds, leaves, bark and roots of certain plants. They are the life blood of the plant, protecting it from insects, bacteria, molds, fungi and other microorganisms, cleansing breaks in its tissue and delivering oxygen and nutrients into the cell nucleus. One oil may contain hundreds of constituents that are aligned in exactly the right manner to trigger a number of responses in the human body. Very concentrated and very powerful, a drop or two of distilled therapeutic-grade essential oil produces quick and significant results.

History of Essential Oils

The effectiveness of using essential oils for health and well-being is backed by over 6,000 years of use. Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts show that priests and physicians were using extracted oils from plants for healing and spiritual ceremonies dating back to 4500 BC. Essential oils are mentioned 188 times in the Bible (e.g. frankincense and myrrh were brought to the Christ child whom the Christians celebrate). Extracted plant oils became an established industry by 3000 BC. In many cases, they were valued more than gold.

In 13th and 14th century Europe, spice traders and perfumers rubbed oils all over their bodies before going out to rob corpses, such as pine, frankincense, clove, cinnamon, balsam and rosemary to create a barrier between themselves and the infecting insects. (Although they didn't realize that this was what was happening.) Also, if they did get bitten, the oils protected them from the bacteria which came with the bite of the infecting fleas. the great plagues while robbing corpses. This blend is known as the "Thieves" blend.
The healing effects of essential oils were rediscovered in 1921 when a French cosmetic chemist in 1921 plunged his seriously burned arm into a jar of lavender oil thinking it was water. He felt immediate relief and continued to apply the lavender oil. During World War II essential oils were successfully used against infections when other antibiotics weren't available.
Recent serious scientific research on Essential Oils started in 1967 and continues to uncover many remarkable benefits for human and animal health.

What does "therapeutic" mean?

Many oils are actually synthetic chemicals. Cheap copies bring inferior results and even have the potential to be toxic and harmful. Therapeutic-Grade essential oils are obtained from correctly identified plant species either wild or organically grown. Young Living plants are steam distilled with pure water and in stainless steel (to avoid chemical reaction with metal) using low temperature and pressure to preserve all plant properties and constituents.
It is necessary that a therapeutic grade oils meets AFNOR (Association French Normalization Organization Regulation) or ISO (International Standard Organization) standards.
This means that primary constituents in an essential oil have to occur in certain percentages. If two or more compounds fall outside the prescribed range of percentages it cannot be recognized as a therapeutic-grade oil thus cannot be AFNOR or ISO certified - even though it might still be of relatively high quality.

Benefits of Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils

The word "therapeutic" applys only to essential oils which meet the AFNOR standards.

Essential oils are small enough in molecular size that they can quickly penetrate the tissues of the skin. Essential oils are lipid soluble and are capable of penetrating cell membranes even if the membrane has hardened because of an oxygen deficiency. According to Jean Valnet, MD. essential oils can affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes.
Essential oils, according to researchers at the University of Vienna, stimulate blood flow which increases oxygen and nutrient delivery. Essential oils are some of the most powerful known antioxidants as determined by the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Adsorption Capacity) test developed at Tufts University.

Essential oils are antibacterial, antifungal, antiinfectious, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antiviral and antiseptic. Some essential oils have been shown to destroy all tested bacteria and viruses.
Essential oils help to detoxify the cells and blood in the body.
Essential oils containing sesquiterpens have the ability to pass the blood brain barrier.
Essential oils are aromatic and when diffused provide air purification by increasing ozone and negative ions in the area, eliminating odours from cooking, bacteria and mould and filling the air with a fresh aromatic scent. Essential oils promote emotional, physical and spiritual well being.
